LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (2nd – 9th March 2015)

Adopters for Adoption (AfA) is keen to hear from gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) singles and couples who are looking to adopt as part of LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (2^nd – 9^th March 2015)

About to celebrate their 1^st anniversary AfA believe in putting people before the process and can offer prospective adopters a distinct advantage and unique experience when adopting with them. The agency, recently inspected and judged as ‘good’ received comments from the inspectors praising their robust assessments, well prepared adopters and that all the adopters that they spoke to expressed satisfaction with the agency and that they found it welcoming and inclusive.

Vivien Slyfield, Head of Service for AfA says: “We are very excited to be involved in LGBT week to promote awareness of adoption especially as the number of children adopted by LGBT couples has tripled since the change in the law in 2005 which gave LGBT couples the same legal rights as straight adopters. However, there is still a need for more people to come forward to adopt children, in particular older children, sibling groups and children with disabilities who often wait the longest to find families”.

Vivien continues: “ Almost 12% of our adopters currently approved or in the assessment process are same sex couples which is excellent when comparing this with the official figures for 2014 which reveal that 6.7% of all adoptions in England were by same sex couples”.
